The VDL Klima box cooler, with its compact design and high cooling capacity, is used on board ships to cool main engines, auxiliary engines and generator sets. The engine’s cooling water flows through a highly efficient V-shaped tube bundle made of copper alloy, which is built into the ship’s sea chest. Raw water flows over the tube bundle through slots at the top and bottom. Heat from the ship’s engine can thus be transferred to the surrounding water.
Water circulation is created by the physical phenomenon of thermosiphon action: warm water rises and cold water sinks.
Impressed Current Anti-Fouling system (ICAF)
Although the Klima boxcooler requires little maintenance, constant exposure to seawater will cause algae and shellfish to build up. Such biological fouling will have a negative impact on heat transfer. The highly effective ICAF system can prevent this.
